Yesterday

After a crusade in a northern Siberia city, hundreds of people went forward for salvation. Out of the many that had come forward, one stood out to me and this moment forever changed my life. Her name was Anna, a Russian woman with deep brown eyes. She stayed long after others had left the altar, weeping uncontrollably. I went over to her, put my hand on her shoulder and asked, “How can I help?”

“Pastor, I gave my heart to the Lord today, but I have a question for you,” she said, looking up at me pleadingly.  I replied, “I will try to answer it.” She said, “If you had only come yesterday...” My mind raced thinking I might have forgotten something. She repeated herself, “If you had only come yesterday. You see Pastor, my mother died this morning and if you would have come yesterday she would have heard.” My only response was, “I’m sorry.”

I began to think how much time I have wasted on things that are meaningless; on things that really don’t matter. I looked into Anna’s eyes and said, “I’m sorry.” I made a commitment to God that day that I would make every day count.
